They pass through decades by word of mouth, cult status, and a color so distinct it became its own category. The Purps Collection is a first-of-its-kind national release- six markets, nine iconic cultivars, each strain (or two when it comes to CA, MI and IL) chosen specifically for the place it calls home. Our team scoured farms across California, Illinois, Michigan, New York, Nevada and Ohio to find the purple genetics that most belong to each state’s landscape and lineage, then built it into a limited release gummy or chew worthy of the history behind it. Nothing generic. Nobody interchangeable. Every limited drop rooted in story, craft, and the thrill of discovery that reminds you why you started strain hunting in the first place.
WHY PURPLE?
Your Purps’ hue isn't random- it comes down to pigments called anthocyanins, the same compounds behind the deep shades in blueberries and concord grapes. Plants produce anthocyanins as a kind of built-in armor against UV radiation and environmental stress. Some cannabis strains are simply built with higher anthocyanin levels than others, which is why cuts like GDP reliably show up violet. But genetics alone don't flip the switch. As temperatures drop during the grow, chlorophyll fades and anthocyanins get their moment to shine (think fall foliage: the cold doesn't create the color, it reveals it). Purple Dream starts with two of California's most iconic names and does something neither could do alone. Blue Dream earned a reputation among consumers for its balanced and approachable character. Granddaddy Purple built its reputation on the opposite: deep body exhales, visual drama, that mythical violet hue that Ken Estes (Granddaddy Ken himself) helped cement as a California institution. When those two worlds collided, Purple Dream was born.
Originally maintained as a clone-only cut circulating through California's medical dispensaries, Purple Dream was a strain passed hand to hand before it ever made it to shelves. Granddaddy Genetics eventually released seeds commercially, but for a long time this one lived in the informal economy of trusted growers and budtenders who knew what they had. Coastal dispensary staff often positioned it simply as Blue Dream's more chill and colorful cousin- a description that frankly undersold it (but wasn't wrong).
Over 15+ years, phenotype variation has stretched the definition of Purple Dream into something closer to a family than a single strain. To understand Mendo Purps, you have to understand the land it came from. Mendocino County sits at the heart of California's Emerald Triangle- the trifecta of Mendocino, Humboldt, and Trinity counties that became the American capital of cannabis cultivation starting in the 1970s. When the counterculture found those hills, they planted their flags and their seeds, and what grew from that moment became the foundation of everything that followed. Mendo Purps is a direct line back to that era.
Here’s the thing- nobody can tell you exactly where Mendo Purps came from. The genetics are a cult(ivar) mystery- an unknown sativa crossed with an indica landrace and passed through generations and dozens of hands before anyone thought to ask… and that's part of what makes it special. This is a strain that predates the impulse to document everything, a survivor from a time when cannabis lived and spread through community trust rather than lab certificates. High Times named it one of their Top Ten Strains of the Year in 2007 and it took the Cannabis Cup in both 2007 and 2009- not because anyone engineered it for awards, but because it was simply that good.
What Mendo Purps offers is diversity. The phenotypes vary wildly- tall and short, deep purple and lavender, earthy and floral and everything between. THC sits around 14–16%, modest by today's standards, but that number misses the point entirely. The terpene profile IS the story. This is an old-school buzz: present, real, and shaped by decades of natural selection rather than modern breeding calculus. Michigan's caregiver model- which allowed registered caregivers to grow for patients before formal licensing arrived- became the incubator for some of the state's most distinct regional genetics. In those basement rooms and short outdoor seasons, growers were selecting for practical beauty: strains with deep color, reliable structure, and the kind of berry-fuel aromatics that moved product through local networks. Mendocino lines, including the Purps family, were a natural starting point. The color was reliable, the market appeal was proven, and the genetics were flexible enough to adapt.
What emerged over time wasn't a single strain but a family of them. Detroit Purps is best understood as a collection of related phenotypes unified by character: that dark-toned, berry-and-gas profile, indica-leaning structure, and the kind of effects that settle in like a slow exhale. Exact lineage varies across cuts because that's how regional cannabis evolves- through dozens of selections, backcrosses, and breeders making decisions that never get formally documented.
Modern Detroit Purps cuts often layer in OG or Diesel genetics to sharpen the fuel notes and potency. Some phenotypes land more candied grape and incense, heavy on the myrcene. With Purple Octane, the mission was direct: take the gas and the color already living in that lineage and concentrate both into one plant.
Purple Octane’s lineage- Biscotti x Sherb BX1 x Jealousy F2- reads like a blueprint for exactly that. Biscotti brings sweet, diesel-tinged dough. The Sherbet backcross adds creamy fruit and terpene depth. Jealousy, Leafly's Strain of the Year in 2022, contributes the loud, modern "exotic" character and the purple lean that ties it all together. Purple Plague arrived the way a lot of boutique cuts do-a quietly, through regional circulation, with a name that did its own marketing before the genetics had a chance to speak. FloraCal bred it from Animal Mints BX1 crossed with Kush Mints, a lineage that runs through Wedding Cake, Animal Mints, and Bubba Kush- the heavy-hitting, resin-dense, modern indoor genetics that defined cannabis' "exotic" era. The name followed the formula: take a color that moves shelves and pair it with an intriguing word that you simply cannot ignore.
But beneath the unique branding, there's a legitimately interesting strain. Late 2010s into the early 2020s, Purple Plague started appearing on menu boards and in discussion threads ahead of any formal lab profiles- typical of boutique cuts that circulate by word of mouth before documentation catches up. Gas, sugared berries, grape: it boasts a terp profile that positions it firmly in the dessert-gas lane without losing the edge that makes it way more than a pretty package.

Here’s what we don’t know: everything else. There’s no breeder credited. No definitive backstory. Purple Ghost OG is the strain that arrived without an origin story attached, and depending on who you ask, that's either an inviting mystery or a deliberate erasure.
There's a theory it used to go by Purple Ghost C*ndy (a word we can’t use here in cannabis edibles). It’s also a name that may have been changed somewhere in the compliance labyrinth that cannabis cultivars navigate as they cross state lines and markets. Another theory points to genetic renaming somewhere along the chain. Both are plausible but neither has been confirmed. Cannabis has a long history of strains that shed their names, lost their paperwork, or get reinterpreted by whoever controls the most recent cut.
What we know for certain: Ghost OG has always been a high-achiever. It’s an OG Kush phenotype selected for exceptional resin production and a citrus-pine profile that punches above its weight.
